About Us:
Since 1996, Hemp Sisters has partnered with a working women's co-op in Kathmandu, Nepal who makes a line of accessories (hats, handbags, backpacks, wallets and more). These items begin with the item number NFP or TM. All items are hand-made, and the hemp, which grows wild in the remote western region of Nepal, is harvested by hand and processed in water (no clorine, chemicals or softening agents).
Fair Trade
Most of our hats and bags are produced in Kathmandu Nepal by Women's Cooperative
groups. Weavers and members of these organizations receive a fair wage and
additional benefits such as bonuses, paid leave, medical benefits, and retirement
plans. These Cooperatives have improved the quality of life by providing
employment for socially and economically disadvantaged women.
Women's Cooperatives are members of Fair Trade producer groups under contract
with Hemp Sisters to produce an exquist array of unique hats, bags, wallets,
scarves, shawls, slippers and other items designed by Hemp Sisters.
Recycled Silk and Recycled Yarn products are made by gathering waste pieces
of silk and wool thread from the cutting room floors of commerical producers
in India. These scraps that would otherwise be burned or landfilled are then
transported back to Nepal where they are re-spun and then sewn, knit or crocheted
into scarves, shawls, hats, bags and gloves.
In the mountains of Nepal, hemp has been used for centuries because of its
strength and durability. It is an indigenous plant which regenerates quickly
after harvesting and requires little cultivation or mechanical processing.
It is the ultimate enviornmentally friendly fabric. This naturally rehetted
hemp (cured in water and not chemicals), is frequently blended with recycled
silk and/or recycled wool to create uniquely colorful, multi-dimensional
products. Natural vegetable dyes are used in the production of our colorful
all hemp fabric products.
We hope you'll give us a try, and please let us know how we're doing. Thank You!!
Take Care,
Karen, Villy and Ed
